A. Product Overview
The Baumer DK diaphragm seal is a direct flanged insert type seal used with pressure measuring instruments such as pressure gauges, pressure switches and pressure transmitters. It is designed for applications where the process medium cannot directly enter the instrument because of its corrosive, viscous, slurry or sedimented nature.
The DK series is available in two main seal types: S26 non PTFE lined and S27 PTFE lined. S26 is suitable for vacuum and pressure ranges from -1 to 0 kg/cm² and 0 to 250 kg/cm², while S27 is suitable for -1 to 0 kg/cm² and 0 to 40 kg/cm². The PTFE lined version can handle process temperatures up to 150 degree C, while the non PTFE lined version can handle -40 degree C to 200 degree C.
The seal comes with a standard 1/2 inch BSP female instrument connection and flange process connection as per DIN, BS, ANSI and JIS standards. It is available with SS and exotic material options to suit different chemical and process conditions.
B. Working Principle
The Baumer DK diaphragm seal works by using a thin welded diaphragm as a barrier between the process media and the pressure measuring instrument. The process pressure acts on the diaphragm surface. This pressure is transferred through a fill fluid, usually silicone oil in the standard version, to the pressure gauge, transmitter or switch.
Because the process media does not enter the instrument directly, the sensing element remains protected from corrosion, clogging, crystallization, solidification and contamination. In applications where the media is thick, sticky or slurry based, the flanged design allows better process mounting and easier periodic flushing.
For PTFE lined versions, the lining gives additional protection against aggressive chemical media. For non PTFE lined versions, the seal is suitable where higher temperature resistance is required.
C. Why It Is Used
The DK series diaphragm seal is used when direct pressure measurement is difficult or unsafe due to harsh process conditions. It protects the instrument and improves reliability in demanding applications.
It is mainly used for:
- Protecting pressure gauges, switches and transmitters from corrosive media
- Measuring pressure in slurry, viscous and sedimented liquids
- Preventing clogging and solidification inside the pressure instrument
- Handling applications where periodic flushing is required
- Improving instrument life in chemical and process industries
- Supporting pressure measurement where flange connection is required
- Providing material compatibility through SS and exotic material options
- Isolating the sensing element from aggressive or contaminated process fluids

FAQ
1. What is Baumer DK diaphragm seal?
Baumer DK diaphragm seal is a direct flanged insert type diaphragm seal used to isolate pressure gauges, switches and transmitters from corrosive, viscous, slurry and sedimented process media.
2. Where is DK diaphragm seal used?
It is used in chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, wastewater, food processing, slurry handling and process industries where the process media may damage or block the pressure instrument.
3. What is the main benefit of a diaphragm seal?
The main benefit is that it protects the pressure instrument from direct contact with harsh process media. This prevents corrosion, clogging, solidification and sensing element damage.
4. Which instruments can be used with Baumer DK diaphragm seal?
It can be used with pressure gauges, pressure switches and pressure transmitters.
5. What is the difference between S26 and S27 seal type?
S26 is the non PTFE lined standard version and is suitable for pressure ranges up to 250 kg/cm². S27 is the PTFE lined version and is suitable for pressure ranges up to 40 kg/cm². The S27 version is preferred for chemically aggressive media where PTFE protection is required.
6. What is the process temperature range of Baumer DK diaphragm seal?
The PTFE lined version can be used up to 150 degree C. The non PTFE lined version can be used from -40 degree C to 200 degree C.
7. What process connection is available in DK diaphragm seal?
The DK series comes with flange process connection as per DIN, BS, ANSI and JIS standards. It is available from 25 NB and above.
8. What is the standard material of the diaphragm?
The standard diaphragm material is AISI 316L stainless steel. Optional materials include Hastelloy C, Monel, Titanium, Tantalum and other exotic materials based on process compatibility.
9. Why is flushing required in diaphragm seal applications?
Flushing is required when the media is viscous, sticky, slurry based or sedimented. It helps clean the process area around the diaphragm and prevents material buildup.
10. Is Baumer DK diaphragm seal suitable for corrosive media?
Yes, it is suitable for corrosive media when the correct diaphragm, flange material and protection option are selected as per the chemical compatibility of the process fluid.
