A. Product Overview
The Insert MI Thermocouple for Thermowell is a metal-sheathed, mineral insulated temperature sensor designed to fit inside a thermowell assembly. It is commonly used where the thermowell is already installed in the process and only the internal sensor insert needs to be replaced or serviced.
The spring-loaded design keeps the sensor tip firmly in contact with the bottom of the thermowell. This improves thermal transfer and helps the sensor provide faster and more accurate temperature readings.
This thermocouple insert is available in simplex and duplex construction and can be supplied with different sheath materials such as SS316, SS310 and Inconel, depending on the process temperature and application environment.

B. Working Principle
The Insert MI Thermocouple for Thermowell works by sensing temperature through the thermowell wall. The thermowell is installed directly into the process, while the MI thermocouple insert is fitted inside the thermowell.
The spring-loaded mechanism pushes the sensor tip towards the closed end of the thermowell. This ensures good thermal contact between the sensor and the thermowell tip. Better contact allows heat to transfer quickly from the process to the sensor.
In a K Type thermocouple, two different metal wires generate a small voltage when exposed to temperature. This voltage is converted into a temperature reading by a temperature indicator, controller, transmitter, recorder or PLC.
In a Pt100 version, the resistance of the platinum element changes with temperature. This resistance change is measured and converted into an accurate temperature value.
C. Why It Is Used
Insert MI Thermocouples for Thermowell are used because they are easy to install, easy to replace and suitable for heavy-duty industrial temperature measurement. They allow maintenance teams to replace the sensor without removing the complete thermowell from the process line.

FAQ
1. What is an Insert MI Thermocouple for Thermowell?
An Insert MI Thermocouple for Thermowell is a mineral insulated temperature sensor designed to be inserted inside a thermowell for industrial temperature measurement.
2. Why is spring loading used in this thermocouple insert?
Spring loading keeps the sensor tip in contact with the thermowell tip. This improves heat transfer and helps provide faster and more reliable temperature response.
3. Can this thermocouple insert be used in existing thermowells?
Yes, it is designed to suit both new and existing heavy-duty thermowells.
4. What probe diameters are available?
Common probe diameters include 3 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm. Other sizes can also be supplied depending on the application requirement.
5. What sheath materials are available?
The thermocouple insert can be supplied with SS316, SS310 and Inconel sheath material.
6. What is the temperature range of this product?
The temperature range depends on the sensor type and sheath material. Common options include -50 to 500 °C and 0 to 1200 °C.
7. What is the difference between simplex and duplex construction?
Simplex construction has one sensing element, while duplex construction has two sensing elements inside the same probe. Duplex sensors are useful when two separate outputs are required from one measurement point.
8. Can this thermocouple insert be supplied with a transmitter?
Yes, an optional 4 to 20 mA transmitter can be supplied instead of the ceramic terminal block if required.
9. Where is this thermocouple insert commonly used?
It is commonly used in process plants, pipelines, tanks, reactors, boilers, furnaces, machinery and industrial thermowell assemblies.
10. Why should I use an MI thermocouple insert instead of a complete thermocouple assembly?
An MI thermocouple insert is useful when the thermowell is already installed. It allows quick sensor replacement without removing the thermowell from the process, reducing maintenance time and plant downtime.
