A. Product Overview
The RDCL-VFS-L Series Side Mount Vertical Operated Level Switch is an internal side mounted float switch designed for reliable liquid level detection in tanks, vessels and process equipment. Its unique L shape construction combines the benefits of vertical sensing and horizontal side mounting, allowing the switch to be installed where top mounting is not suitable or where space is limited.
The compact design allows the user to configure the switching action as per application requirement. The float can be removed, inverted and refitted on the stem to reverse the switching action from normally open to normally closed or normally closed to normally open.
This series is available in multiple construction options, including:
- Full stainless steel construction with SS stem and SS float
- SS stem with Nylon float
- SS stem with Polypropylene float
- SS304 and SS316 stem options
- SS316L float option
- Custom stem size and float size options
- M10 inverted male plug standard process connection
- Custom process connection options such as 1/4 inch BSP, M16 and TC fitting
The product is suitable for industrial liquid level sensing where compact size, simple installation, reliable switching and corrosion resistant construction are required.
B. Working Principle
The Side Mount Vertical Operated L Shape Level Switch works on the magnetic float and reed switch principle.
A float moves up and down with the liquid level inside the tank. As the liquid level rises or falls, the float changes its position on the stem. The float contains a magnet, and when it reaches the switching area, it activates the internal reed switch inside the stem.
This reed switch changes the electrical contact position and gives an ON or OFF signal to the connected control panel, relay, alarm system, pump controller or automation system.
The switching action can be reversed by removing the float, turning it upside down and refitting it on the stem. This allows the same switch to be used for high level detection, low level detection, overflow protection or dry run protection depending on the application.
C. Why It Is Used
The RDCL-VFS-L Series Level Switch is used for reliable liquid level control in applications where top mounting is difficult and side mounting is preferred. Its L shape design allows vertical float movement while the switch is installed from the side of the tank.
It is mainly used for:
- Detecting high level and low level in tanks
- Preventing tank overflow
- Protecting pumps from dry running
- Automatic pump start and stop operation
- Liquid level sensing in compact tanks
- Level indication in feeder tanks
- Boiler float switch applications
- Industrial cleaning units
- Process liquid monitoring
- Machine mounted liquid level control
This switch is useful because it is compact, easy to install, cost effective, reliable and customizable for different tank designs and liquid media.

FAQ
1. What is a Side Mount Vertical Operated Level Switch?
A Side Mount Vertical Operated Level Switch is a float type level switch installed from the side of the tank while the float moves vertically with the liquid level. It is used to detect liquid level and provide an electrical switching signal.
2. Why is this level switch called L shape?
It is called L shape because the stem is designed in a bent L type structure. This allows side mounting from the tank wall while still providing vertical float movement inside the tank.
3. What is the main advantage of this level switch?
The main advantage is that it combines side mounting and vertical sensing in one compact design. This makes it suitable for small tanks, limited space applications and tanks where top mounting is not possible.
4. Can the switching action be changed from normally open to normally closed?
Yes. The switching action can be reversed by removing the float, inverting it and refitting it on the stem. This makes the switch suitable for different level control applications.
5. What materials are available in this series?
The switch is available with SS304 and SS316 stem options. Float options include SS316L, Nylon and Polypropylene depending on the application and liquid compatibility.
6. What is the standard process connection?
The standard process connection is M10 inverted male plug. Custom process connections such as 1/4 inch BSP, M16 and TC fitting can also be provided as per requirement.
7. What is the temperature range of this level switch?
For the stainless steel float version, the temperature range is approximately minus 40 degree Celsius to 135 degree Celsius. For the plastic float version, the temperature range is approximately minus 40 degree Celsius to 100 degree Celsius.
8. Where can this level switch be used?
It can be used in boiler float switch applications, industrial cleaning units, feeder tanks, water tanks, oil tanks, liquid level sensing systems, pump automation panels and process vessels.
9. Is this level switch suitable for direct connection with contactor loads?
Yes, the switch can be directly interfaced with contactor loads within the specified switching rating. For higher load applications, it is recommended to use an intermediate relay for better protection and longer switch life.
10. Can the size be customized?
Yes. Stem size, float size, process connection and switching point can be customized as per tank design and application requirement.
