A. Product Overview
The HIOKI CM3286-50 combines the convenience of a clamp meter with detailed electrical power measurement functions. It allows technicians to measure electrical parameters directly on live circuits without disconnecting the current carrying conductor.
The instrument can measure:
• AC voltage
• AC current
• Active power
• Reactive power
• Apparent power
• Power factor
• Phase angle
• Frequency
• Voltage and current peak values
• Simple active energy consumption
• Phase sequence
• Maximum, minimum and average values
It supports single phase 2 wire, single phase 3 wire, balanced three phase 3 wire and balanced three phase 4 wire systems. For three phase measurements, the meter can calculate estimated power values.
The CM3286-50 can display up to four related parameters simultaneously. It also includes an Auto Hold function, connection guidance for three phase circuits and warning indications using both sound and a red backlight.
B. Working Principle
The HIOKI CM3286-50 measures current through its clamp sensor. The clamp is placed around a single conductor, allowing the instrument to detect the magnetic field produced by AC current flowing through that conductor.
Voltage is measured using the connected voltage leads.
Using the measured voltage and current values, along with their phase relationship, the meter calculates electrical parameters such as:
Active Power: Actual power consumed by the load.
Reactive Power: Power associated with inductive and capacitive loads.
Apparent Power: Combination of active and reactive power.
Power Factor: Ratio between active power and apparent power.
Phase Angle: Angular difference between voltage and current.
Because the CM3286-50 uses True RMS measurement, it can accurately measure AC voltage and current even when the waveform is not a perfect sine wave.
When the optional Z3210 Wireless Adapter is installed, measured data can also be transferred to a smartphone or tablet through Bluetooth and analyzed using HIOKI GENNECT Cross.
C. Why It Is Used
The HIOKI CM3286-50 is used when technicians need to quickly check electrical power conditions without installing a large power analyzer.
Typical applications include:
• Checking voltage and current on electrical circuits
• Measuring active, reactive and apparent power
• Checking power factor
• Checking phase angle
• Detecting phase sequence in three phase systems
• Measuring power consumption
• Checking electrical load conditions
• Investigating abnormal power fluctuations
• Checking unbalanced three phase loads
• Electrical maintenance and troubleshooting
• Detecting electricity theft and meter tampering
• Comparing electricity meter readings with actual measured power
• Basic harmonic investigation when used with Z3210 and GENNECT Cross
The CM3286-50 can display MAX, MIN, AVG and PEAK values, making it useful when checking variations in electrical supply conditions.
Hioki also specifically positions this model for detecting electricity theft by comparing electric meter readings with actual measurements or by measuring current on the supply side of an unauthorized connection.
