A. Product Overview
The RTM Online TSS Sensor is a digital total suspended solids sensor designed for continuous online monitoring of suspended particles in liquid. It is suitable for industrial wastewater, sewage treatment, effluent treatment, process water and environmental water quality monitoring.
The sensor is available in two variants:
RTM-ANL-TSS-SENS-450
RTM-ANL-TSS-SENS-451
The main difference is the self-cleaning system option. One model is available without self-cleaning and the other model is available with an automatic cleaning brush.
It can be used with the RTM-ANL-TSS-CONT-22 controller, which provides LCD display, relay output and 4 to 20 mA analog output. The sensor supports RS-485 communication with MODBUS protocol, making it suitable for integration with PLC, SCADA, online monitoring systems and industrial automation panels.
Key specifications include 12VDC power supply, 0.5 to 5000 mg/l measuring range, 0.1 mg/l resolution, 4 second response time, accuracy less than 3 percent, IP68 protection level, optical fiber window, 0 to 50 degree Celsius operating temperature and 5 meter cable length.
B. Working Principle
The RTM Online TSS Sensor works on the 135 degree backlight optical measurement principle. The sensor uses an 880 nm infrared LED light source to detect the concentration of suspended solids in water or process liquid.
When light passes through the sample liquid, suspended particles scatter and absorb the light. The sensor measures this optical response and converts it into a total suspended solids value in mg/l. The built-in adaptive software algorithm helps reduce interference from external light and improves measurement stability.
The optical fiber structure improves repeatability and stability because the measurement is less affected by ambient light conditions. The sensor also compensates for water color, helping to reduce color-related interference during measurement.
In the self-cleaning version, the automatic cleaning brush helps remove contamination and air bubbles from the optical window. This reduces fouling, extends the maintenance cycle and supports stable long-term online operation.
C. Why It Is Used
RTM Online TSS Sensor is used to continuously monitor total suspended solids in water and wastewater processes. TSS measurement helps users understand how much solid material is present in liquid, which is important for treatment efficiency, process control and environmental compliance.
It is commonly used to monitor:
Effluent quality
Wastewater treatment performance
ETP and STP process control
Sludge concentration
Industrial discharge water
Process water contamination
Clarifier and settling tank performance
Online environmental water quality
Suspended particles in liquid
The sensor helps plant operators detect process changes, improve treatment performance, reduce manual testing dependency and maintain better control over water quality.
